Newsletters

Each month we publish a complimentary e-newsletter on diversity, flexibility, work/life balance and related issues to our global readership of practitioners, policy makers and academics.  The newsletter highlights cutting-edge research, international and legal developments, as well as upcoming events (eg conferences) which discuss diversity, flexibility, equity and well-being.

For further information, or to subscribe to our e-newsletter, please email Juliet Bourke.

"Although we live in a global economy, we do not benefit from the lessons learned in work-life from other countries as we should. One of the unique exceptions is the (Aequus Partners’) Diversity & Flexibility email news.  We in the US look forward to this newsletter because it contains not only news of advances in Australia, but also because it includes succinct and insightful analysis. It is a real treasure."  Ellen Galinsky, President, Families and Work Institute

Aequus Partners Diversity and Flexibility e-newsletters

August 2010 - In this newsletter, we focus on workplace harassment, sexual harassment and workplace romance.

  1. AUS research: Sexual harassment and work engagement
This research is based on a sample of 538 nurses employed in Australian hospitals. It examines (i) the relationship between sexual harassment and work engagement; and (ii) gender differences in perceptions of sexual harassment. The findings suggest that reducing sexual harassment in organisations will increase levels of engagement, thus providing a stronger business case for the investment of resources in addressing sexual harassment.

  2. Finnish research: Organisational responses to workplace harassment
This research explores the responses of 205 Finnish municipalities (which employ 1 in 5 Finnish workers) to reports of workplace harassment. The study found that reconciliatory responses were the most commonly used method of management (ie mediation and counselling), followed by transferring the perpetrator or target to another location. The findings illustrate the importance for Human Resources managers to both understand the range of responses available to them in dealing with harassment as well as the circumstances in which they may be most appropriate.

  3. USA research: Workplace romance
This article reviews empirical findings of research into workplace romances spanning twenty years and suggests organisationally sensible strategies for managing workplace romances. A key recommendation is for HR professionals to take a proactive role in managing workplace romances, by establishing a workplace romance policy and taking a leadership role in ensuring that workplace romances do not detract from the participants’ or co-workers’ job performance.

  4. AUS podcast: Sexual harassment allegations against David Jones’ CEO
ABC Radio’s Life Matters recently ran a programme on sexual harassment in the workplace, and our Juliet Bourke was part of the panel who discussed the organisational and legal responses to the issues.
